Some heating problems can be fixed with repairs, but there are clear signs that replacement makes more sense. If your system is over 15 years old and needs repairs every year, a new installation will save you money in the long run. Your heating bills keep going up even when you keep the thermostat at the same setting — this usually means the system is losing efficiency and working harder than it should.
You might hear strange noises coming from the unit, like banging, clanking, or rumbling sounds that did not happen before. These sounds often mean parts inside are wearing out or breaking. If some rooms in your home feel warm while others stay cold, the system may no longer be distributing heat evenly. A heating system that runs constantly without warming your home to the set temperature is another sign the equipment is failing.
Yellow or flickering flames on a gas furnace indicate a problem with combustion that needs immediate attention. Water leaks around the unit or rust on the system also point toward replacement. If you notice burning dust smells when the heater runs, the system may be overheating or have a clogged filter that is causing bigger problems.

He exceeded his responsibilities by adding a heat pump to my home purchase. Without prior acquaintance, he took the initiative to visit the property and assess the job requirements. On the same day, he contacted me to confirm that he could complete the task within a few hours, providing a reasonable price. I was delighted not only by the affordability but also by his ability to schedule the work for the following week. After searching for a month for someone to undertake this project, I encountered numerous companies unwilling to travel to my area. However, Matt not only accepted the job but also executed it with remarkable skill and efficiency, all while keeping costs manageable. I wholeheartedly recommend him and his company to anyone seeking honesty, quality workmanship, and a customer-first approach. Thank you, Matt, for your outstanding support "Lisa Russ"Posted on Brianne Hess2025-10-06Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Matt and his team are amazing! Scheduling was very simple and the person organizing dispatch was courteous. The technician was professional in appearance and behavior. Initially we had scheduled for an annual maintenance which was quoted at $199 but as it turned out we were having problems with our evaporator coil freezing so that was reduced to a diagnostic service call for only $80; that was my mistake for scheduling it as an annual checkup as opposed to a service call so I don't know that the tech was prepared to do cleaning and/or repairs. He did inspect the equipment however, after finding our return vents suboptimal are evaporator coil clogged and potentially a bad capacitor and dirty fan blades and our outdoor condenser was reportedly " very loud but in operable condition with no leaks in the system" he was adamant that we either spend several thousand dollars having them clean the air handler and replacing some maintenance Parts such as the capacitor, cleaning the fan, and replacing the evaporator coil which involves evacuating the coolant, cutting out the evaporator coil from the copper lines and resetting a new evaporator coil in its place. Alternatively we were offered the option to replace the outdoor condenser and the indoor Handler with some modifications being made to the ductwork to improve return air for approximately $9,000. I disassembled the air handler and cleaned the fan and had a technician from another local company come out and look at the system. they disassembled and cleaned the evaporator coil without having to cut the lines and then rechecked the pressures at the condenser and found the improvements in aiflow had raised pressures at the condenser and solved our freezing problem, he also took the time to evaluate our duct work and while not optimal for an older house the system setup is quite common and should be more than sufficient for the requirements of the air handler furthermore they offered to help us find appropriate filters for the returns to prevent the evaporator coil from getting clogged in the future and advised on appropriate filters to use at the air handler. they evaluated the condenser and found that it was no louder than normal and in good working order. How *long* it stays working... we'll see EDIT: after having a discussion with the owner Matt, I understand his point of view about wanting to remove the coil to clean it to prevent potential liability for damage to the lines that looked likely to occur. The options that he gave us a replacing components versus replacing the entire system were reasonable and allowed us to pick from within our interests and budget. It was not high pressure sales pitch or anything like that. but as always folks, if money is tight a second opinion on such a big project never hurts.Posted on Kristopher Herring2025-09-14Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The cost of heating system replacement in northeast Tennessee varies based on several factors. System type matters most — a standard gas furnace costs less upfront than a high-efficiency model, but high-efficiency units pay for themselves over time through lower monthly energy bills. The size of the unit needed for your home also affects price, as does whether you need new ductwork installed or modified.
Labor costs depend on the complexity of the installation. Simple like-for-like swaps take less time than rerouting ductwork or installing new gas lines. The brand and efficiency rating you choose also influence the final cost. Premium units with the highest efficiency ratings cost more initially but can significantly reduce your heating bills.
Many homeowners in our area are replacing systems that are 15 to 25 years old. These older units often cost more to repair than they are worth, and they use significantly more energy than modern equipment. If you are weighing repair versus replacement, consider that a new system typically pays for itself within 7 to 12 years through energy savings alone.
Some homeowners ask about heat pump installation as a way to get both heating and cooling in one unit. While the upfront cost may be higher, the long-term savings on your energy bills and the convenience of a dual system often make this a smart choice. We help you compare these options during our in-home estimate so you can make the best decision for your budget.
If your home does not have existing ductwork and you want to avoid installing it, a boiler installation with radiators or radiant floor heating may be an option worth discussing. This approach heats your home without forced air, and many homeowners find it provides more consistent, comfortable warmth throughout the home.
