Your home will tell you when the ductwork needs cleaning. Watch for these common signs that your system is due for service.
Dust buildup around your vents and on nearby surfaces is one of the clearest indicators that particles are circulating through your ductwork instead of being filtered properly. If you find yourself dusting more frequently despite regular cleaning, your ducts are likely the source.
Musty or stale odors coming from your vents when the heating or cooling runs indicate mold, mildew, or accumulated debris in your ductwork. This smell often intensifies during humid weather or when the system first turns on after being idle.
Unexplained allergy flare-ups or respiratory irritation among family members can point to poor indoor air quality caused by contaminated ducts. When ducts are clogged with dust, pollen, pet dander, or mold spores, these allergens get redistributed throughout your living spaces every time air circulates.
Weak airflow from some vents while others blow strongly suggests blockages or buildup restricting air movement through portions of your duct system. This imbalance strains your HVAC equipment and reduces comfort in affected rooms.
Visible mold growth inside ductwork, on vent covers, or around air returns is a serious issue requiring immediate attention. Mold in your duct system continuously releases spores into your living spaces, creating ongoing health concerns.
Unexplained increases in your energy bills often result from a duct system working harder than necessary due to blockages and buildup. When airflow is restricted, your HVAC system runs longer and uses more energy to achieve the same results.

He exceeded his responsibilities by adding a heat pump to my home purchase. Without prior acquaintance, he took the initiative to visit the property and assess the job requirements. On the same day, he contacted me to confirm that he could complete the task within a few hours, providing a reasonable price. I was delighted not only by the affordability but also by his ability to schedule the work for the following week. After searching for a month for someone to undertake this project, I encountered numerous companies unwilling to travel to my area. However, Matt not only accepted the job but also executed it with remarkable skill and efficiency, all while keeping costs manageable. I wholeheartedly recommend him and his company to anyone seeking honesty, quality workmanship, and a customer-first approach. Scheduling was very simple and the person organizing dispatch was courteous. The technician was professional in appearance and behavior. Initially we had scheduled for an annual maintenance which was quoted at $199 but as it turned out we were having problems with our evaporator coil freezing so that was reduced to a diagnostic service call for only $80; that was my mistake for scheduling it as an annual checkup as opposed to a service call so I don't know that the tech was prepared to do cleaning and/or repairs. He did inspect the equipment however, after finding our return vents suboptimal are evaporator coil clogged and potentially a bad capacitor and dirty fan blades and our outdoor condenser was reportedly " very loud but in operable condition with no leaks in the system" he was adamant that we either spend several thousand dollars having them clean the air handler and replacing some maintenance Parts such as the capacitor, cleaning the fan, and replacing the evaporator coil which involves evacuating the coolant, cutting out the evaporator coil from the copper lines and resetting a new evaporator coil in its place. Alternatively we were offered the option to replace the outdoor condenser and the indoor Handler with some modifications being made to the ductwork to improve return air for approximately $9,000. I disassembled the air handler and cleaned the fan and had a technician from another local company come out and look at the system. they disassembled and cleaned the evaporator coil without having to cut the lines and then rechecked the pressures at the condenser and found the improvements in aiflow had raised pressures at the condenser and solved our freezing problem, he also took the time to evaluate our duct work and while not optimal for an older house the system setup is quite common and should be more than sufficient for the requirements of the air handler furthermore they offered to help us find appropriate filters for the returns to prevent the evaporator coil from getting clogged in the future and advised on appropriate filters to use at the air handler. they evaluated the condenser and found that it was no louder than normal and in good working order. How *long* it stays working... we'll see EDIT: after having a discussion with the owner Matt, I understand his point of view about wanting to remove the coil to clean it to prevent potential liability for damage to the lines that looked likely to occur. The options that he gave us a replacing components versus replacing the entire system were reasonable and allowed us to pick from within our interests and budget. It was not high pressure sales pitch or anything like that. but as always folks, if money is tight a second opinion on such a big project never hurts.Posted on Kristopher Herring2025-09-14Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Several factors influence what you will pay for air duct cleaning in northeast Tennessee. Understanding these factors helps you budget appropriately for the service.
Home size is the primary cost driver. Larger homes with more extensive duct systems require more time, labor, and equipment to clean thoroughly. A typical single-story home with standard ductwork costs less to clean than a multi-story home with a complex duct network.
Duct system configuration affects pricing significantly. Homes with rigid metal ductwork generally clean faster than those with flexible ductwork, which requires more careful handling. Unusually long duct runs, multiple bends, or hard-to-access components add time to the job.
The level of contamination determines how much work is required. Light dust buildup cleans more quickly than heavy debris, mold contamination, or years of accumulated particles. Homes with pets, smokers, or significant dust problems typically need more intensive cleaning.
Additional services increase total cost. Sanitizing treatments after mold removal, sealing duct leaks discovered during cleaning, or adding air quality accessories like air scrubbers or UV purifiers are separate line items that add to your investment.
Comparing the cost of air duct cleaning with other air quality improvements can help you decide where to allocate your budget. While UV air purifier installation addresses biological contaminants differently, and whole house dehumidifier installation manages moisture that contributes to duct problems, professional cleaning provides immediate relief from existing buildup that these systems prevent over time.
